The zones holding the engravings are strictly protected and entry requires an accredited guide in most seasons, to protect the rock. Trips are organised from villages such as Tende and Casterino. Reaching them means several hours of mountain walking — a full day for someone reasonably fit, not a stroll.
Difficult. A railway runs north up the Roya valley to villages such as Tende, a fine trip in itself, but it reaches only specific points. Inside the park public transport is close to non-existent. Without a car, pick one destination on the rail line and plan around it.

A national park in the Maritime Alps north of Nice on the Italian border, combining altitudes above three thousand metres with an exceptional closeness to the Mediterranean. That closeness is what distinguishes it: you can go from the beach at Nice to two thousand metres in about two hours by car. The result is a rare ecological range — Mediterranean plants low down and Alpine species above within a short distance — and the park is home to ibex, chamois and the wolf, which returned to the area naturally in the 1990s. Its best-known feature is the Vallée des Merveilles, where tens of thousands of rock engravings cut by people in the Bronze Age cover the rocks around Mont Bégo. These are among the most important bodies of rock art in Europe, and reaching them needs a long mountain walk and an accredited guide in the protected zones. Decisive practical points: the park is very large and access realistically needs a car. Mountain roads close with snow from autumn to late spring. This is not a half-day trip from Nice — allow a full day at least, and preferably a night.
