It is not a substitute for the beach but for a second promenade afternoon: arrival or departure day (the airport is minutes away), a cloudy day, or when children need running space after city days. For those roles it is Nice's best value and least effort.
Tram line 2 from the centre towards the airport stops practically at it. Driving takes ten minutes from downtown with relatively easy parking.
A simple café and plenty of picnic corners — smartest is to bring a picnic; the place is made for family sittings on the grass.

Parc Phoenix is Nice's first family destination: seven hectares at the western end of the promenade near the airport, combining a botanical garden, a small zoo and a giant greenhouse — among Europe's largest — for a token ticket. The "Green Diamond" greenhouse rises 25 metres and holds six tropical climates: palms, giant ferns, orchids and waterfalls, plus caiman crocodiles, turtles and tropical fish. Outside there is a big lake with waterbirds, pelicans and flamingos, tropical aviaries, and small animals from wallabies to pygmy goats. It is neither grand nor fashionable, but it is the best family bargain in the city: a full half-day for the price of a sandwich, with playgrounds and unlimited running room.
