Parga is a coastal town in the northwest of the Preveza regional unit in Epirus, northwest Greece, on the Ionian coast between Preveza and Igoumenitsa, about 57 km southwest of Ioannina in a straight line. It is a resort town known for its natural beauty. In antiquity the Greek tribe of the Thesprotians lived here, and Mycenaean tholos tombs have been found nearby. In the late Hellenistic period the ancient town of Toryne, meaning «ladle», stood on the site, named for the shape of its beach. Parga is first mentioned by its present name in 1318. White, yellow and pink houses climb a green hill around a small bay, crowned by an old stone castle on a rocky headland. A small island with a white church lies off the beach, and coves and beaches of clear turquoise water stretch around, including the long Valtos beach behind the castle. Visitors climb to the castle for a view over the town and bay, wander the climbing lanes and sit along the waterfront. They swim at the nearby beaches, and boats leave the harbour for Paxos, Antipaxos and the Acheron river.
