Parliament Square is Nassau's official heart, ringed by pink colonial buildings with green shutters and white columns, with a white statue of Queen Victoria in the middle. It is one of the best-known images of the capital. The central columned building holds the Senate, and the buildings around it hold the House of Assembly and government offices. Sources date the buildings to the early 19th century. The statue of Queen Victoria was put up on 24 May 1905 to mark her birthday. A Bahamas Historical Site plaque on one wall explains the building's history. You stand before the statue with the pink buildings, green shutters and balconies around you. The square is small and tidy, close to Bay Street and the harbour where cruise ships dock. In the evening the buildings are lit. The square is in central Nassau, 600 m from the Queen's Staircase. It is open and free to see from outside; the buildings are government offices not usually open to visitors. Keep your belongings safe in busy streets.
