Between Jaraguá and Cantareira.
Parque Anhanguera is the largest municipal park in São Paulo, covering some 950 hectares of Atlantic Forest in the far north-west of the city. Only forty hectares are open to the public, however, while the rest is kept as a wildlife refuge restricted to staff and researchers. The park was founded in 1979. It lies in a buffer zone linking the Jaraguá and Cantareira state parks, acting as an important ecological corridor that lets animal and plant species move between them. Eucalyptus dominates the vegetation, with an understorey of native species, Atlantic Forest remnants along the streams, dry grassland and marshes. The open area has walking trails, a cycle path of about 2,200 metres, a downhill mountain-bike track, sports grounds, an orchid house, a medicinal plant garden and picnic spots. Entry is free, making it a good day in nature on the edge of the metropolis.
