Areia Vermelha Marine State Park lies in Cabedelo north of João Pessoa. It was created by decree on 28 August 2000 over 231 hectares, centred on the «island» of Areia Vermelha, the Red Sand. This island is actually a sandbank about two kilometres long and one wide off Camboinha beach that appears only at low tide, like the Picãozinho reefs near Tambaú. Natural pools and coral reefs surround it in clear, light-green water, making it an ideal place to swim. It is reached by boats and rafts leaving Camboinha and Cabedelo according to the tide table, and trips last a few hours before the water covers the sand again. Take care around the reefs and do not walk on them, both to avoid injury and to protect them.
