Vale Botanical Park opened in May 2004 inside the Tubarão Port industrial complex in Vitória, about twelve kilometres from the city centre, within the «green belt» the mining company Vale created around its facilities, and showcases the restoration and protection of Atlantic Forest. It covers thirty-three hectares open to visitors, with more than 140 tree species including brazilwood, jacaranda and flowering ipê trees, home to small wild animals and many birds. Its site was chosen so the public can come in without disturbing port operations. The park has shady paths, family picnic areas and environmental education activities, a calm outing for children and walkers away from the crowded beaches. Entry is free; check opening days and times before going.
