Parque Burle Marx opened in 1995 in São Paulo's Vila Andrade district, in the gardens the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx designed for the mansion of the businessman «Baby» Pignatari. In the 1940s Pignatari hired Oscar Niemeyer to build a house for himself and his future wife, but the marriage ended before the house was finished; only the garden was completed, and the house was later demolished. The park covers about 138,000 square metres and keeps remnants of the Atlantic Forest, with trails, a jabuticaba grove, lakes, a large lawn, the Burle Marx garden and the rammed-earth Casa de Taipa e Pilão used by the bandeirante explorers. A non-profit foundation runs it under an agreement with the city. Entry is free, daily 7:00-19:00.
