Parque Centenario is a large, round park in Caballito, close to the geographic centre of Buenos Aires. The city bought its 12 hectares in 1898, the French landscape architect Charles Thays designed it, and it took its name in 1909 to mark the centenary of the May Revolution of 1810. At its heart is a lake with ducks, fish and a small island, ringed by paths and old trees, and it has a large open-air amphitheatre that hosts free summer concerts, plus an astronomy observatory run by an amateur society that offers courses, talks and telescope viewing. The Argentine Museum of Natural Sciences stands on its edge, and at weekends stalls of second-hand books and crafts spread out around it. The park is free and open, a breathing space for the central neighbourhoods for walks, runs and picnics.
