City memorial.
The Dom Nivaldo Monte City Park is an urban park in Natal opened on 21 July 2008, designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer with his daughter Anna Maria Niemeyer and the architect Jair Valera. It covers 64 hectares between the Candelária, Cidade Nova and Pitimbu districts and is the city's second-largest park after the Dunes State Park. It was Natal's first municipal protected area, safeguarding one of the capital's key groundwater recharge zones. Its land is covered by sand dunes that act as a great filter, catching rainwater and cleaning it before it reaches the aquifer, while also helping to balance the city's temperature and sheltering many species of plants and animals. The park's symbol is its 45-metre central tower, home to the city memorial and an exhibition on Natal's history and growth. There are also nature trails, jogging tracks, a library, an auditorium and an orchid house. It is a good place for a walk early in the morning or before sunset, away from the midday heat.
