Parque da Cidade, officially the Joventino Silva City Park, is one of the largest green spaces inside Salvador. It lies in the Pituba district near Santa Cruz and Itaigara and is run by the city council. Its land was once part of the old Pituba Farm, and Joventino Silva donated it to the city in the 1970s as building spread across the district, an area of about 1.4 million square metres. The park was created by decree on 30 October 1973, opened in 1975, and renovated in 2001 and again in 2014. It holds patches of Atlantic Forest, walking and running paths, playgrounds and spaces for events and cultural shows at weekends. Locals come in the morning to exercise and in the afternoon for family outings, and it offers a green break from the crowded beaches and the historic centre.
