The Youth Park is a cultural, leisure and sports complex in the north of São Paulo, built on the site of the former Carandiru prison, a place marked by violence and human rights abuses; turning it into a park was a symbolic act to lift that stigma. Its third and final phase was completed in 2007. The design competition was won by the office of the architect Gian Carlo Gasperini, with landscaping by Rosa Grena Kliass, who divided it into three areas: a sports area with courts, skating spaces and running tracks; a central area for strolling, with paths, gardens and raised walkways; and a cultural area with technical schools. The cultural area holds the São Paulo Library, opened in 2010 on more than 4,000 square metres, with 43,000 titles of books, magazines and games and comfortable furniture that invites reading. The park makes a short family outing near the metro station.
