Parque da Represa is the most important urban park in São José do Rio Preto in north-western São Paulo state and the city's best-known image. It opened on 1 October 1955 together with the neighbouring water treatment plant, and its reservoir still supplies between a fifth and a quarter of the city's drinking water after treatment. Local lore has it that in 1944 the mayor's wife served the state governor a glass of tap water; startled by its red colour, he heard her say firmly, «this is the water the people of Rio Preto drink», and promised funds for water treatment. The money only came years later, and the reservoir and plant opened in 1955. A 2.7-kilometre walking track rings the reservoir, with exercise equipment and kiosks for families, and wild animals and fish live here. On the water a musical light fountain, described as the second largest in the country after the one in São Paulo's Ibirapuera Park, sends more than thirty jets up to about fifteen metres. In 2007 the park was voted one of the city's «seven wonders».
