Parque das Aves is a private conservation centre for Atlantic Forest wildlife, on 16 hectares of native forest at the entrance to Iguaçu National Park, founded by the biologists Anna Sophie and Dennis Croukamp and opened on 7 October 1994. It holds about 1,500 animals of 140 species, mostly birds along with reptiles and mammals, many of them confiscated or rescued from illegal trade. A trail of about 1.3 kilometres winds through the forest and into large walk-through aviaries where you walk among the birds: toucans with their coloured bills, red and blue macaws, pink flamingos and hummingbirds, as well as a butterfly house and pools of young caimans. The park is right by the falls entrance, so the two fit easily into one day, before or after the falls. The birds are most active early in the morning.
