The Lagoa da Conceição Dunes Municipal Nature Park is a 706.76-hectare protected area in the east of Florianópolis, known for its beautiful landscapes: wide fields of sand dunes, often covered with different kinds of coastal restinga vegetation and cut by a large, complex network of lagoons and streams. Its most famous feature is the Joaquina Dunes, named for lying opposite Joaquina beach and one of the city's most important natural attractions, so much so that people call the whole area the Joaquina Dunes Park. The easily reached dunes offer a beautiful panoramic view and are ideal for sandboarding at different levels of difficulty, drawing many tourists and sportspeople every day. The park was officially created by municipal decree in 1988 to stop urban sprawl spreading over this large dune field, and it matters both ecologically, protecting animals, plants and water sources, and economically through the tourism it brings.
