Pituaçu Metropolitan Park, in the Pituaçu district of Salvador near the coast, was created by state decree on 4 September 1973. It first covered 660 hectares and today covers 425, making it the largest ecological reserve in the city. It holds remnants of Atlantic Forest with varied plants and wildlife, and the lovely Pituaçu lagoon, around which native trees were planted in 2006, including the pau-brasil that gave the country its name. Four to five thousand people visit at weekends. It has a cycle path, a skating and skate area, sports courts, a pier for pedalos, the base of the Salvador Rowing Association and ecological walking trails, and it hosts sports competitions, book fairs and reading sessions. It makes a morning in nature away from the city's bustle, with places to eat and drink.
