Parque do Carmo, officially Parque do Carmo Olavo Egydio Setúbal, is a municipal park in São Paulo's East Zone covering about 1.5 million square metres, making it the city's second largest urban park and one of the largest in the metropolitan area, with a broad reserve of Atlantic Forest. The area takes its name from the Carmelite order, which owned the land in colonial times after the Indigenous peoples who gave their names to neighbouring districts such as Itaquera and Guaianases. Today the park receives more than 400,000 visits a month. Its best-known feature is the cherry grove, one of the largest in the world with some six thousand trees, where the Cherry Blossom Festival is held each year when the pink flowers open in the Brazilian winter, a legacy of Japanese immigrants. It also has lakes, paths, wide picnic lawns and a modern planetarium on its edge.
