Parque do Ingá is the best-known park in Maringá, northern Paraná: a protected stretch of native forest in the heart of the city. The area was once dense woodland, and after a fire destroyed part of its trees, mayor Adriano José Valente began plans in 1969 to turn it into a park. It opened on 10 October 1971, with its forest and an artificial lake formed by damming a spring inside the woods, and locals soon nicknamed it the «People's Club». In June 1978 a Japanese garden was opened in the park to mark seventy years of Japanese immigration to Brazil and the visit of Japan's Prince Akihito to the city. The park was declared a municipal reserve in 1991, and its founder's name was added to its official title in 2014. Monkeys and many birds live here, and the local university uses it for research and teaching. It is a lovely place for a quiet, shaded walk, and entry is free.
