Maringá's Parque do Japão is a park opened in 2008 to mark one hundred years since the first Japanese immigrants arrived in Brazil. The idea took shape in 2006 as a tribute to the Japanese who settled in the city, and the project grew out of Maringá's sister-city link with Kakogawa in Japan, signed in July 1973. The park echoes Japanese architecture and garden design, with a large lake full of colourful fish, paved paths through landscaped gardens, monuments and spaces that host events and cultural celebrations. It is a separate place from the small Japanese garden inside Parque do Ingá in the city centre. It is a calm spot for a stroll and photographs, especially in the morning or before sunset. Entry is free, and the park opens Tuesday to Sunday and closes on Mondays.
