Parque do Sabiá is a municipal park and zoo in the east of Uberlândia, the largest city of the «Triângulo Mineiro» in Minas Gerais. It spreads over some 180 hectares of green space, reservoirs, woods and trails and draws around ten thousand visitors a day, rising to twenty-five thousand at weekends. Work on the park began in July 1977 on land its owner had donated to the city. Its stadium opened in May 1982 with a friendly in which Brazil beat Ireland 7–0 ahead of the World Cup, in front of more than seventy-two thousand spectators, and the whole complex was inaugurated in November that year. The zoo keeps species of the cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, and the park counts more than three hundred plant species and two hundred animal species, some of them living free in the woods. Three protected springs feed seven small reservoirs, and there is also a fish-farming station. It is ideal for walking, running and a family day out, and entry is free.
