Pampulha Ecological Park, officially the Promotor Francisco Lins do Rego Park, is a park on Pampulha Lake in Belo Horizonte, run by the city's Zoo-Botanical Foundation. It opened in May 2004 on a site once called Ilha da Ressaca, designed by the architects Gustavo Penna, Álvaro Hardy and Mariza Machado Coelho. Its story is one of environmental recovery: disorderly building around the Pampulha basin silted up the lake, and millions of cubic metres of sediment were dredged out and piled to form the park's ground, which took about a decade to settle before plants and wildlife moved in. The park covers some 300,000 square metres of green space: an esplanade for sport, kite flying and big shows, a grove for picnics, a bandstand for cultural events, a slackline area and the Japanese Memorial built for the centenary of Japanese immigration to Brazil. It pairs well with the nearby Pampulha Modern Ensemble.
