The Dr. Antônio Teixeira Vianna Ecological Park in São Carlos is a municipal zoo next to the city's federal university. It opened on 9 September 1976, is named after a well-known veterinarian, covers 72 hectares of cerrado, and focuses on breeding and conserving species and on environmental education. Since 1988 the park has followed a distinctive approach: 90 per cent of the animals on show are Brazilian wildlife, and 65 per cent belong to endangered species. It holds about 445 animals of 138 species in more than eighty enclosures, among the largest for wild animals in Brazil, designed to be as close as possible to their natural surroundings. Entry is free and the park opens Tuesday to Sunday from 8:00 to 16:30. It is an excellent family outing for seeing maned wolves, deer, birds and other cerrado animals up close and relaxing in nature.
