Altamiro de Moura Pacheco State Park is a fully protected reserve run by the state of Goiás, created by law in 1992 over about 3,183 hectares. Part of it was cut out in 1993 for the João Leite reservoir, which supplies water to greater Goiânia, leaving about 2,132 hectares. In 2014 part of the land around the reservoir became another reserve, João Leite State Park, at 2,832 hectares, so the two parks now form a wide green belt around the capital's water source. The BR-060/153 highway crosses the park and serves as its main access. The park protects cerrado and remnants of riverside forest, with walking trails including the Lake Trail, usually open at weekends and on holidays. According to the latest information it opens Wednesday to Sunday from 8:00 to 17:00 with free entry; confirm before visiting.
