Campos do Jordão State Park, known locally as the Horto Florestal, is a reserve of 8,341 hectares covering a third of the municipality of Campos do Jordão in the Mantiqueira mountains, on the border with Minas Gerais. It was created on 27 March 1941. The park protects an important remnant of Atlantic Forest, including Araucaria and Podocarpus forest, alpine meadows and cloud forest, at altitudes from 1,030 to 2,007 metres. More than 186 bird species are known here, along with endangered animals such as the cougar, the ocelot and the vinaceous-breasted amazon parrot. When it was created, exotic conifers were planted over some 2,000 hectares, which are being removed gradually so that native vegetation can return. The park has a visitor centre, a restaurant, a craft shop and barbecue areas, walking and cycling trails, and a 12-metre wooden tower with a panoramic view. The Sapucaí River and Four Bridges trails follow the river, and harder trails lead to the Gargalhada and Celestina waterfalls. Check fees and hours.
