Cunhambebe State Park was created by decree on 13 June 2008 and covers about 38,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest-clad mountains in the municipalities of Angra dos Reis, Rio Claro, Mangaratiba and Itaguaí. Its headquarters is in Mangaratiba, the town from which ferries leave for Ilha Grande. The park is named after Cunhambebe, father and son, two Tupi leaders who resisted Portuguese colonisation in the sixteenth century as part of the Tamoio Confederation. In 2022 hundreds of Indigenous people launched an initiative in Mangaratiba to revive the chief's memory. Its main draw is waterfalls such as Itimirim, Santa Bárbara, Espelho and Véu da Noiva, reached by trails through forest and clear rivers. Ask at the park office which trails are open, or hire a local guide for the longer routes.
