Cantareira State Park protects a stretch of Atlantic Forest in the Serra da Cantareira north of São Paulo, covering about 7,917 hectares across São Paulo, Guarulhos, Mairiporã and Caieiras. In 1994 UNESCO declared it part of the São Paulo City Green Belt Biosphere Reserve. The whole Cantareira range, at more than 64,000 hectares, is considered the largest urban green area in Brazil and one of the largest in the world, sheltering springs, streams and dense forest home to many birds and small monkeys. The park is split into visitor sectors, the best known being Pedra Grande, where a trail through the forest climbs to a big rock looking out over São Paulo's skyscrapers stretching to the horizon, a view that joins forest and city in one frame. Entry is paid and the sectors open on different days, so check before you go.
