Serra Furada State Park is a nature reserve created in 1980 on the escarpment of the Serra Geral in south-eastern Santa Catarina, between the municipalities of Orleans and Grão-Pará. To the west it adjoins São Joaquim National Park, and together the two protect more than fifty thousand hectares. The park covers 1,330 hectares of Atlantic Forest, rising from four hundred to 1,480 metres, so its woods range up to cloud forest on the heights, and surveys have recorded 174 bird species. Its namesake landmark is a huge cleft in the sandstone, about forty-five metres high and eight metres wide, visible from kilometres away; it is sometimes confused with the «Janela Furada» rock window in the neighbouring national park. The park opened to visitors in 2021, and entry is by advance booking with the state environmental agency, on trails including the several-hour Serra Furada trail. Bring good walking shoes and plenty of water.
