Itapeva State Park lies in Torres in north-eastern Rio Grande do Sul, on the Atlantic coast north of Itapeva Lagoon. It was created in 2002 over about a thousand hectares and preserves one of the last dune and restinga formations on the state's north coast. The park combines dunes, restinga vegetation, dry and flooded meadows, marshes, peat bogs and damp forest, with large fig trees and a wide variety of orchids and bromeliads, as well as carnivorous plants of the Drosera and Utricularia genera. Its residents include a small red-bellied toad that is threatened with extinction in Brazil. Trails run through the forest to the dunes and the sea. Because the staff is small, the park requires advance booking for activities and trails, and a guided morning visit of one and a half to three hours is recommended. Contact the park before going to confirm times.
