Terra Ronca State Park, the «Rumbling Earth», is a reserve in the municipality of São Domingos in north-eastern Goiás near the Bahia border. It was created in 1989 over about fifty-seven thousand hectares, surrounded by an environmental protection area in the Serra Geral, and it is one of Brazil's most important cave regions. The park was set up to protect a unique natural complex of numerous caves rich in stalactites and stalagmites, with springs and clear rivers that flow both inside and outside the caves, and a varied flora and fauna that includes endemic species. In some caves the rivers form sandy beaches and a succession of halls underground, the São Mateus complex being among the most famous. The area is far from big cities and reaching it takes a car and some patience, but it rewards visitors with genuine underground adventures. The caves can only be visited with accredited local guides, and the dry season is the best time to go, when river levels inside the caves are lower.
