Over the canyon.
The Cerrado State Park is a reserve in Jaguariaíva and Sengés in north-eastern Paraná, about twelve kilometres from central Jaguariaíva. Over some 1,830 hectares it protects one of the last remnants of the Brazilian savanna, the «cerrado», in the state, together with the deep canyon of the Jaguariaíva River. The area lies at 800 to 900 metres, in a transition zone between the savanna of central Brazil and the forests of the south, so a small area holds all four main vegetation types of the region: forest, cerrado, grassland and rock vegetation. Researchers from the Federal University of Paraná have long studied it. Along the valleys stand sandstone outcrops sculpted by wind and rain, with dense forest on the riverbanks. The park has trails with a total length of three kilometres and a lookout over the Jaguariaíva canyon, from which you can walk down to the river to see its strong rapids. On the Santo Antônio stream are small falls and a forty-metre waterfall. The park opens on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, with visits on Thursdays and Fridays booked in advance.
