Itinguçu State Park protects a group of mountains on the Atlantic coast south-west of Peruíbe, on the south coast of São Paulo state. It was created by state law in 2013 as part of the Juréia-Itatins mosaic of protected areas. The park has two sections: the Itinguçu nucleus, which receives most visitors, and the Arpoador nucleus, open only for education and research. The Guaraú River marks its north-eastern edge and the ocean its eastern side, with the Barra do Una reserve to the south and the Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station to the west; together its two nuclei draw about 35,000 visitors a year. It holds large areas of well-preserved Atlantic Forest and waterfalls, including the Cachoeira do Paraíso, along with beaches, rocky shores, mangroves and salt-marsh forest, and is rich in birds, among them some thirty species of hummingbirds and woodpeckers. Check which trails are open before going.
