Lajeado State Park in Tocantins spans the municipalities of Palmas and Lajeado over 9,931 hectares, protecting a fragile, dry, hilly environment east of the state capital, Palmas; its entrance is about eighteen kilometres from the city. It was created by law on 11 May 2001 to protect wildlife, plants and natural resources and to manage tourism, as well as to safeguard the city's water supply and curb urban sprawl. It covers a plateau bounded to the west by the Frente de Cuesta escarpment, which drops to the Tocantins depression, in cerrado country of grassland, savanna and forest. The park holds springs, waterfalls and ancient rock paintings, and is surrounded by the Serra do Lajeado Environmental Protection Area. It can be visited with advance notice for hiking, quiet contemplation and interpretive walks with trained guides, so arrange your visit with the park first and avoid the hottest hours.
