Pau-Oco State Park is an Atlantic Forest reserve in Morretes, Paraná, covering 905 hectares within the Lagamar mosaic of protected areas. It was created by decree on 21 November 1994 to protect water, plants and wildlife. Its best-known sight is the Salto da Fortuna, a fifty-metre waterfall with a large natural pool at its foot where visitors can swim. It is reached by a trail of medium difficulty taking about four hours there and back, which crosses rivers and passes stretches and ruins of the old colonial Arraial road, opened between 1586 and 1590 and now replaced by the BR-277 highway. A local guide is required to reach the waterfall. Wear shoes suited to water and mud, carry water and food, and avoid rainy days when the rivers rise. The trip pairs well with a plate of the famous barreado stew in central Morretes.
