Dois Irmãos State Park is a park, zoo and Atlantic Forest reserve in Recife, capital of Pernambuco. It was founded in 1916 on the land of the Dois Irmãos sugar mill, meaning «two brothers», owned by the brothers Antônio and Tomás Lins Caldas, and it is one of the leading zoos of Brazil's North and Northeast. The zoo-botanical garden covers about 14 hectares, with a natural science museum and around 650 birds, reptiles and mammals of more than 120 species; the rest is an Atlantic Forest reserve, among the largest left in the state, home to sloths, marmosets and coatis. The park was later enlarged to more than a thousand hectares. It has ecological trails, environmental education and captive-breeding programmes, so it is no longer just a window on animals but a nature conservation centre. Check hours and fees before going.
