Lagamar de Cananéia State Park is a reserve of some 40,760 hectares in the municipalities of Cananéia and Jacupiranga in the Ribeira Valley of southern São Paulo state. It was created on 21 February 2008 from parts of the former Jacupiranga State Park and is one of the largest tracts of Atlantic Forest in Brazil. The park takes in part of the Iguape–Cananéia–Paranaguá lagoon and estuary complex, one of the largest marine nurseries in the South Atlantic, and UNESCO recognises it as a core zone of the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve and a natural World Heritage Site. Tucuxi dolphins are often seen in the estuary, and in 1990 the black-faced lion tamarin, a critically endangered endemic monkey, was discovered in its southern sector. For years visits were limited to researchers, but according to the state's protected-areas guide the park is now open to the public daily from 8 am to 5 pm. It suits visitors to Cananéia looking for forest and estuaries away from the beaches.
