Nova Baden State Park lies in Lambari in southern Minas Gerais, in the spa-town circuit near São Lourenço. It covers 214 hectares in the Serra da Mantiqueira, with steep, mountainous terrain between 900 and 1,300 metres and a moist climate with occasional winter frost. The area was first protected in 1974 as the Nova Baden Biological Reserve and became a state park by decree on 27 September 1994. Several springs rise in the forest, and the main stream forms the Sete Quedas, the Seven Falls waterfall. The park protects Atlantic Forest with jequitibá, cedar, peroba and Brazilian pine trees up to 35 metres tall, rich in mosses, lichens, bromeliads and orchids; the lichens are a sign of clean air. It is home to 22 species of mammals, including howler monkeys. The visitor centre is in the old farmhouse and usually opens Tuesday to Sunday.
