Pedra Selada State Park lies in the municipalities of Resende and Itatiaia in Rio de Janeiro state, near the mountain area of Visconde de Mauá in the Mantiqueira range, and covers some 8,036 hectares of forest and highland. It is named after Pedra Selada, the «saddled stone», a 1,755-metre rock peak whose shape recalls a horse's saddle and which stands out from the road through the nearby villages. A well-marked trail leads to the top, which offers a full 360-degree view over the valleys and surrounding summits. The park was created for recreation, education and research, and to support the tourism-based rural economy of Visconde de Mauá and Penedo. The climb calls for reasonable fitness and a clear day; set off early with plenty of water and ask about trail conditions at the park office.
