Restinga de Bertioga State Park was created by decree on 9 December 2010 and covers about 9,318 hectares entirely within Bertioga. It is one of the largest stretches of restinga, the coastal sand forest, on the São Paulo coast, and an important ecological corridor between coastal ecosystems and the Serra do Mar mountains. The park protects the rivers that supply the region and endangered plants and animals, combining restinga, mangroves and dense Atlantic Forest. Its known trails include the flat Itaguaré trail over the restinga to the Itaguaré channel and beach, and the Guaratuba and D'água trails. Visits are only allowed with guides accredited by the town and the state forestry foundation, booked through licensed operators; the park office works Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 17:00. Beware of venomous animals and river crossings, and follow your guide.
