Serra do Brigadeiro State Park is a mountain reserve in the «Zona da Mata» region of eastern Minas Gerais, spread over parts of eight municipalities including Araponga, Ervália and Fervedouro. It was created on 27 September 1996, and its management plan was approved in 2008. The park takes in the highest parts of a group of ranges belonging to the Mantiqueira chain, with very broken terrain rising to 1,985 metres at the Pico do Soares. Its climate is subtropical highland, averaging around 18 °C, with frost below zero on the highest ground and a dry season from June to August. Its great draw is its wildlife, especially threatened primates: the northern muriqui, the largest monkey in the Americas, the brown howler monkey and the buffy-tufted marmoset. The park attracts mountain walkers and wildlife watchers and lies about an hour and a half from the Caparaó area. Bring warm clothes in winter.
