Serra do Conduru State Park in southern Bahia covers about 9,275 hectares across Ilhéus, Uruçuca and Itacaré, protecting remnants of original Atlantic Forest between the coastal towns of Ilhéus and Itacaré. It is named after the conduru tree, whose valuable red wood grows in the rainforests of southern Bahia, while «serra» comes from its rolling terrain and ridge-like heights. It is known worldwide for its enormous biodiversity, among the richest forests on the planet in tree species, and for its many endemic species. The park has attractions open to visitors, including a circular interpretive trail and lookouts, and became the first park in north-east Brazil run under a concession to improve its facilities and visitor services. Ask which trails are open before going, and combine the visit with the nearby Itacaré beaches.
