Serra do Papagaio State Park protects a mountainous area of Atlantic Forest in the Mantiqueira range of southern Minas Gerais. It covers 22,917 hectares across Aiuruoca, Alagoa, Baependi, Itamonte and Pouso Alto, including parts of the Garrafão and Papagaio ranges. About half its area is steep slopes above 1,800 metres; the highest peaks are in the south, including the Morro da Mitra do Bispo at 2,149 metres, and in the south-east the Pico do Bandeira at 2,357 metres. It holds meadows, forests and pockets of Araucaria forest, and major headwaters of the Rio Grande rise here. The park connects geographically with the northern part of Itatiaia National Park, together forming a continuous protected mountain area. Hikers come for summit trails and wide views; the weather on the heights is cold and changeable, so go with a local guide from Aiuruoca or Baependi.
