Serra do Rola-Moça State Park is one of the most important green areas in Minas Gerais, covering about 3,941 hectares across Belo Horizonte, Brumadinho, Ibirité and Nova Lima, and is the third largest park inside an urban area in Brazil. It was created by decree on 27 September 1994 as a special protection zone for the springs that supply the capital and its surroundings, so not all of it is open to tourism; the rest is available for walking, cycling and environmental education. Its name comes from a folk tale immortalised by the poet Mário de Andrade in «A Serra do Rola-Moça», later set to music by Martinho da Vila in 1987. The park's heights look out over Belo Horizonte and the surrounding ranges, and many come for the sunset from lookouts along the road that crosses it. Go in the dry season from May to September and keep to the permitted trails.
