Serra do Tabuleiro State Park is the largest fully protected conservation area in Santa Catarina, at 84,130 hectares, about one per cent of the state's territory, spread across municipalities including Florianópolis, Palhoça, Santo Amaro da Imperatriz, Águas Mornas, São Bonifácio, São Martinho, Imaruí and Paulo Lopes. It was created on 1 November 1975 at the initiative of the botanists Father Raulino Reitz and Roberto Miguel Klein, and is run by the state environment agency. It runs from Atlantic Forest-clad mountains down to the coast and islands, combining highlands, coastal plains, beaches and lagoons. The park has three visitor centres: the headquarters on the BR-101 in Palhoça, about forty kilometres from Florianópolis, the Water Themed Centre in Imaruí and the Earth Themed Centre in São Bonifácio. It also takes in the Moleques do Sul islands, a resting and nesting site for seabirds and home to one of the world's rarest rodents. Ask at the visitor centre which trails are open, and bring insect repellent and water.
