Serra das Andorinhas State Park, also known as Serra dos Martírios, is a reserve in São Geraldo do Araguaia in south-eastern Pará, along the Araguaia River, about 160 kilometres from Marabá. It was created in 1996 over some twenty-five thousand hectares and is run by the state's forestry and biodiversity agency. The park lies in hilly country in the transition between the Amazon rainforest and the cerrado savanna, so it combines varied ecosystems with waterfalls and lookouts over the Araguaia River. Ancient peoples lived here and left rock paintings and pottery behind, and the park counts 292 geological cavities, including twenty-six caves and thirty-six grottoes. It is one of the region's main attractions, drawing visitors from nearby towns and other states for hiking, rock climbing and adventure. Visit with a local guide who knows the trails and caves, and carry plenty of water.
