The Serra Nova and Talhado State Park is a large mountain reserve in northern Minas Gerais, covering some fifty thousand hectares in Rio Pardo de Minas, Porteirinha, Mato Verde and neighbouring municipalities, about 640 kilometres from Belo Horizonte, and taking in parts of the rugged Serra Geral and Espinhaço ranges. The park was created in 2003 and later enlarged to include the Serra do Talhado, cut through by the Mosquito River. It lies on the divide between the São Francisco and Jequitinhonha basins, and several streams rise within it. Rocky grassland, cerrado and dry forest dominate, home to animals such as the puma, the maned wolf and capuchin monkeys. Its best-known sights are waterfalls and pools such as the Cachoeira do Serrado, the Poço do Jacaré and the natural slide called the Escorregador. Entry is free every day from 8:00 to 17:00, with arrival advised before 15:00. Stick to marked trails, preferably with a local guide, and keep away from watercourses at the first sign of rain. Because there are several entrances, contact the park office beforehand for the best route, especially via Porteirinha.
