Sítio do Rangedor State Park lies in the Calhau district of São Luís, capital of Maranhão. It protects about 120 hectares of eastern Amazon forest remnants, the original environment of Upaon-Açu, the island on which the city stands, and is ringed by public buildings including the state Legislative Assembly. It was created as a fully protected ecological station in 2005, when visits were allowed only for educational purposes, and a 2016 law turned it into a state park combining protection, research, environmental education and recreation in nature. It also plays an important role in recharging the groundwater that supplies the city. In September 2019 a new leisure area opened on a small, degraded part of its land, with eight squares of sports equipment and playgrounds, a walking trail, a 3.5-kilometre cycle path, a food-truck village and parking for five hundred cars. It suits a walk or a workout early in the morning or in the evening.
