Parque Ipanema is an urban park in Ipatinga covering about 1.1 square kilometres, planted with some twelve thousand trees, and is considered one of the largest green areas inside a city limit in Brazil. It was first designed to protect the banks of the Ipanema stream. Planning began in the 1970s between the city and the Usiminas steel company, and works started in 1980 but stalled for some years; in 1985 the celebrated landscape designer Roberto Burle Marx was hired to design it, making it one of his last projects. It opened gradually during the 1990s and was declared municipal cultural heritage in 2000. The park has a children's playground, the Science Park, sports courts, walking and cycling paths and an open-air amphitheatre, and links to the 2.6-kilometre Caminho das Águas railway, the city plant nursery and a karting track named after Emerson Fittipaldi. It suits a family outing in the morning or late afternoon.
