Jacques Cousteau Municipal Park is a park in the Betânia district of western Belo Horizonte, covering about 335,000 square metres according to the city and named after the famous French ocean explorer. Its story is one of the city's oddest. The land was a large rubbish dump for about twenty years; in 1971 it became the Vila Betânia park and from 1976 the municipal nursery, whose seedlings were planted along the capital's streets, squares and parks. It only opened to the public in 1999. Today it is a showcase of landscaping, three times winner of the «Cidade Jardim» garden contest. It has an ecological trail and a spring visitors are asked to protect, plus playgrounds, exercise equipment and seating areas, and the parks foundation runs free guided walks on its history and biodiversity. Entry is free and it opens daily in the morning; check the closing time.
