From around 1840.
Parque Lage is a public park at the foot of Corcovado, beneath the Christ the Redeemer statue, on an estate bought by Antonio Martins Lage in the 1830s. Its romantic landscape garden was laid out around 1840 with an elaborate artificial grotto, and a second grotto holds aquarium tanks. In the 1920s its mansion was remodelled for the industrialist Henrique Lage and his wife, the singer Gabriella Besanzoni. It was listed as a national monument in 1957 and became a public park in the 1960s, with trails through the tropical forest under Corcovado. The mansion houses a school of visual arts, and its inner courtyard with a long pool is one of the most photographed spots in Rio. Note: the mansion has been closed for renovation since May 2025, with reopening expected around April 2027, but the gardens and trails are open free every day. A trail up Corcovado through the Tijuca forest starts here; it is strenuous and best done with a guide.
