Parque Luro is a provincial reserve in La Pampa, about 35 kilometres south of the city of Santa Rosa, covering 7,600 hectares of caldén forest, the thorny tree typical of the region's plains, with a lake and sand dunes. In the early twentieth century it was the private hunting estate of Pedro Luro, called San Huberto, and in 1909 he brought red deer from Europe whose descendants still live in the reserve. At its heart stands «El Castillo», the family mansion, now a museum and National Historic Monument, along with a museum of old carriages and other historic buildings. Visitors walk trails between forest and lake to see deer and birds, with some 160 bird species recorded, plus picnic and camping areas. It opens Monday to Friday 09:00-18:30 and weekends 10:00-18:30, last entry 17:00, for a small fee. The castle is shown on guided tours, so check their times before going.
